*Principles
The list of references should be as short as possible, with essential references only. The purpose of the list and
reference style is to ensure readers can locate cited literature; accurate and complete references are therefore crucial.
Misspelled names, incorrect dates, or missing publisher locations defeat the purpose of the list. When in doubt, include
too much rather than too little information. The accuracy of references is the responsibility of the author(s), to whom
queries should be addressed.

*In Press/Unpublished Work
Papers accepted for publication but not yet released should be listed as "in press" in place of the Journal volume, using
the year of acceptance as the date. Manuscripts submitted for publication but not yet formally accepted are unpublished.
Unpublished work/data, personal communications, manuscripts in preparation or submitted for publication or in review, and web
publications should be cited in the text, not the reference list (e.g. personal communication/unpublished data from "Author",
"Date"; or URL).

*Abbreviations
Where possible, Journal titles should be abbreviated according to internationally recognized systems (e.g. International
Serials Catalogue of the ICSU Abstracting Board, ISBN 92-9027-004-7). If uncertain about how to cite a reference, enclose
a photocopy of the title page of the publication.

*Citations
All citations must have a corresponding entry in the reference list; all entries in the reference list must be cited in
the text. References in the text are made by giving the author's name and date of publication (e.g. Smith, 1988). If the
name of the author is part of the sentence, only the year is in parentheses. Where two or more papers published in the
same year by the same author are cited, each paper should be distinguished by a small letter placed after the date
(e.g. Smith, 1988a, b). For three or more authors, use "and others" (e.g. Smith and others, 1988). If a paper is in review,
refer to it as personal communication (e.g. personal communication from A.M. Smith, 1988) until it has been formally
accepted; then it may be listed in the references as in press.

*Reference List
References to literature cited should be in alphabetical order as follows: by proper name of first author followed by
initials, then initials and proper name of subsequent author(s); year of publication; title of paper; title of periodical;
volume number; issue number in brackets; first and last page numbers of the paper. For a book, the place of publication,
the name of the publisher, and the number of the edition should be given.
